TOM YUM SOUP

Tom Yum soup is a specialty of Thai cuisine that delivers an explosion of flavors in the mouth. This spicy and tangy soup is crafted with a base of chicken broth and an array of herbs and roots including lemongrass, galangal, and Kaffir lime leaves. The flavors are heightened with the addition of green lime juice, red peppers, and a hint of palm sugar. Tom Yum soup is a comforting dish ideal for cold days or any occasion where a touch of spice is desired on the menu. Follow this straightforward recipe to prepare Tom Yum soup using our Tom Yum Paste.

 

For 2-3 people

Ingredients:

  • 10-12 tiger shrimp, peeled and de veined
  • 2 ½ cups chicken broth or water
  • 1-2 tbsp. tablespoon of Tom Yum Buriram paste (spiciness level: 1 tablespoon for beginners / 2 tablespoons: for regulars)
  • 1 cup fresh mushrooms (oyster mushrooms or button mushrooms cut into pieces)
  • 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, cut in half
  • 1-2 tbsp. tablespoon of fish sauce (to taste)
  • 1 C. tablespoon of lime juice
  • 1 C. tablespoon of sugar (to taste, optional)
  • 1-2 tbsp. tablespoons of unsweetened condensed milk or coconut milk (optional)
  • Garnish of your choice: chopped coriander or chives, Thai basil leaves.

Instructions:

  1. In a saucepan, bring chicken broth or water to a boil. Mix the Tom Yum Buriram paste until dissolved.
  2. Add the other ingredients starting with the shrimp then the mushrooms and cherry tomatoes. Bring to a boil then reduce to medium heat once the shrimp are cooked. Add the milk of your choice at this step, if necessary.
  3. Adjust seasoning with fish sauce, sugar and lime juice.
  4. Garnish with fresh herbs of your choice and serve hot.

Tips:

Several other ingredients pair wonderfully with the flavors of our Tom Yum Paste!

  • In a saucepan, bring chicken broth or water to a boil.
  • Stir in the Tom Yum paste until fully dissolved.
  • Add the remaining ingredients, beginning with the shrimp, followed by the mushrooms and cherry tomatoes.
  • Once the shrimp are cooked, reduce the heat to medium. If desired, add your preferred type of fat (coconut milk, unsweetened condense milk or cream) at this stage.
  • Adjust the seasoning with fish sauce, sugar, and lime juice to taste.
  • Garnish with fresh herbs of your choice and serve hot.
